NCSO experience requirements
To apply for the NCSO designation in Alberta you need a minimum of 3 years (6,000 hours) of construction field experience within the last 10 years. ACSA states plainly that "any construction field experience that cannot be validated will not be considered", so documentation matters as much as the hours.
Who qualifies
ACSA counts three categories of construction field experience:
- Construction workers — labourers or skilled tradespeople working directly and actively in the field: residential, commercial, industrial, road building, pipeline construction, mobile equipment operation and similar.
- People directly and actively engaged in safety, such as a Site Safety Coordinator.
- Supervisors of construction workers, such as a Site Superintendent, who also work directly and actively in the field on a full-time basis.
How to prove it
ACSA lists several acceptable forms of validation, including:
- Journeyman certification obtained within the last 10 years. If it is older, you will need one of the other documents instead.
- Employer letters on company letterhead, signed by management, stating start and end dates, combined experience of 3 years (6,000 hours) or more, your job title, a job description covering main duties, and the percentage of time spent in the field.
The recency trap
The experience must fall within the last 10 years. Long-serving people who moved into an office role some years ago occasionally discover their qualifying field time has aged out. Check your dates before paying course fees.
