The useful starting point
Find the right section in the right product document, then record what it answers and what still needs clarification.
Give each request a clear destination
CCOHS describes a standardized SDS structure. Useful starting points include identification in Section 1, hazards in Section 2, handling and storage in Section 7, exposure controls in Section 8, stability and reactivity in Section 10, and revision information in Section 16.
Memorizing numbers is only the first part of the exercise. Your answer also needs the exact product and the question being answered. A correctly numbered section in the wrong document is still the wrong source. Put the product name at the top of your worksheet before recording any findings.
Sort four requests from a fictional office
Priya receives four messages about a fictional product called Workshop Cleaner R. Purchasing wants to confirm which supplier document belongs to the delivery. A supervisor wants to locate the product-specific handling information. The safety coordinator wants to review what the supplier says about exposure controls. An administrator wants to know whether the office has an earlier revision.
None of these messages asks Priya to decide whether a particular job is safe. Her immediate task is to locate and identify relevant information for the responsible reviewer. Keeping that boundary clear prevents a document lookup from quietly becoming a technical approval.
Handle an incomplete search result
Suppose the first search result is a two-page promotional leaflet with the right brand colour but no clear product identifier. It may be useful product literature, but it has not answered the SDS request. Mark the result as a mismatch or unresolved lead; do not fill the worksheet from memory.
Now suppose the correct sheet includes a reference to a different section. Follow that reference within the document and record why it matters. Good navigation can require more than one starting point. Finish your study note with one unresolved question and who would be able to clarify it, such as the supplier or the workplace person responsible for the product.
Check your reasoning.
The handling section is located, but the product code on the SDS differs from the delivered container. Is the request complete?
Open the suggested reasoning
No. The section location is plausible, but the document-to-product match remains unresolved. Record the mismatch and seek the correct product information before using the sheet as the basis for a decision.
