NCSO renewal and maintenance
The NCSO is maintained rather than held permanently — provincial associations set ongoing maintenance requirements, and these are administered by ACSA in Alberta. Because renewal terms are revised periodically, confirm the current requirements directly with ACSA’s current NCSO documentation rather than relying on second-hand accounts.

Maintenance and renewal terms for professional designations change, and an outdated figure repeated confidently online is worse than no figure at all. What is well established
- The NCSO is administered provincially — by ACSA in Alberta — under the national CFCSA standard.
- Course equivalency certificates must be dated no more than 5 years ago to be accepted, which indicates how ACSA treats currency of training generally.
- Field experience must fall within the last 10 years to count toward application.
Keeping your knowledge current regardless
Whatever the formal requirement, legislation changes and a designation is only as useful as the knowledge behind it. Alberta's OHS Act, Regulation and Code are amended periodically, and safety staff are expected to work from the current version. Periodic practice against current legislation questions is worth doing whether or not it is being counted.
