What the Confined Space module covers
On the Alberta NCSO exam, Confined Space covers confined space entry permits, atmospheric testing order, standby attendants, and rescue requirements. It is one of ten modules, and the exam draws across all of them — which is why candidates who are strong on site but narrow in coverage still fail.
Where candidates lose marks. The order of atmospheric testing and the exact duties of the standby person are commonly missed.

Sample question 1
A CONFINED SPACE is defined as a space that:
- Is any enclosed space without natural ventilation
- Is any underground space or trench
- Has: (1) limited/restricted means of entry or exit, (2) is not designed for continuous human occupancy, AND (3) is large enough for a worker to enter to perform work correct
- Is too small for a worker to stand upright in
Why
All THREE elements must be present: (1) Limited entry/exit (not easily escaped in emergency), (2) Not designed for continuous occupancy (not a room or hallway), (3) Large enough to enter and work. Tanks, silos, sewers, tunnels, large vessels are common examples.

Sample question 2
A Permit-Required Confined Space differs from a confined space because it:
- Must be below grade (ground level)
- Contains or has potential for a SERIOUS HAZARD - atmospheric, engulfment, entrapment, or other recognized serious risk correct
- Requires a government-issued entry permit
- Is smaller and more difficult to enter
Why
A PRCS has one or more of: (1) Atmospheric hazard, (2) Engulfment potential, (3) Internal geometry hazard (converging walls), (4) Any other recognized serious safety/health hazard. PRCS requires a written entry permit issued by a competent person.

Sample question 3
Before entering a confined space, atmospheric testing MUST measure:
- Temperature, humidity, and barometric pressure
- Only oxygen levels - other gases are secondary
- Oxygen level, flammable/combustible gas, and toxic contaminants correct
- Carbon dioxide and H2S only
Why
Three mandatory atmospheric parameters: (1) OXYGEN - safe range 19.5%-23%, (2) FLAMMABLE GAS - must be below 10% LEL, (3) TOXIC CONTAMINANTS - must be below applicable exposure limits. ALL THREE. EVERY TIME. Before entry and monitored continuously during.

How to study this module
- Answer before you read. Cover the options and try to produce the answer from memory. Recognition feels like knowledge and collapses under exam pressure.
- Space your review. Come back to missed questions after a day, then three days, then a week. NCSO Prep schedules this automatically.
- Check the source. When you miss one, read the explanation and note which instrument the rule sits in — Act, Regulation or Code.
- Time yourself once you are consistent. The full exam allows up to 2 hours and requires 75%.
