What the Emergency Preparedness module covers
On the Alberta NCSO exam, Emergency Preparedness covers emergency response plans, rescue provisions, first aid requirements, fire prevention and drills. It is one of ten modules, and the exam draws across all of them — which is why candidates who are strong on site but narrow in coverage still fail.
Where candidates lose marks. First aid requirements scale with crew size and distance from medical care, and those tables are easy to misremember.

Sample question 1
A complete Emergency Response Plan (ERP) must include:
- Emergency contacts, evacuation procedures, assembly points, roles/responsibilities, and communication procedures for each emergency type correct
- The company's financial contingency and business continuity plan
- Worker payroll and insurance information
- Only fire evacuation routes and extinguisher locations
Why
A complete ERP must address: emergency contacts, evacuation routes and muster points, roles and responsibilities, communication procedures, and specific response procedures for each type of foreseeable emergency at that worksite.

Sample question 2
The purpose of an Assembly Point / Muster Station is:
- A staging area for emergency vehicles and equipment
- A first aid treatment area for injured workers
- A designated location where ALL workers gather so a headcount confirms everyone evacuated safely correct
- A location to store emergency equipment and first aid supplies
Why
Muster points serve one critical purpose: ACCOUNTABILITY. After evacuation, supervisors take headcount to confirm every worker is accounted for. If someone is missing, rescue can begin immediately. Never skip the muster count.

Sample question 3
How often must emergency response procedures be PRACTICED (drilled) at minimum?
- Only when the government requests it
- At least ONCE PER YEAR - more frequently for high-risk operations correct
- Drills are optional best practice if the written plan is thorough
- Every 5 years when the plan is updated
Why
Annual drills are the minimum. High-risk sites (H2S areas, confined spaces, chemical storage) should drill more frequently. Drills reveal plan weaknesses in a controlled setting - far better than discovering gaps during an actual emergency.
